Here, we will briefly talk about Discord Status and the meaning of Idle status. We will also see how to set the status in Discord to idle on a computer as well as a smartphone.

A Brief Note on Discord

Discord is a community-driven communication app. It is free to download as well as to use. With Discord, you can set up public or private “Servers” and make text, voice, or video chats. While there are similar apps such as Skype, Slack, TeamSpeak, etc., what makes Discord so special is its seamless integration into several gaming and media platforms (Steam, Twitch, etc.). Even though it was originally a gamer-centric app, Discord grew much larger than that. Today, we have Discord serves for music bots, streamers, podcasts, artists, and many other fields and interests.

What Does Idle Mean on Discord?

Before understanding what does idle mean on Discord, we need to first take a look at Discord Status. We already made a dedicated guide on How to Change Discord Status. Do check it out for more info. Coming back to Status in Discord, it is a simple way to indicate your online presence or intent on Discord. There are four status options in Discord. They are:

Online Idle Do Not Disturb Invisible

If a user is actively using the Discord app or website, then his/her status will be Online with a green circle.

Idle Status

So, what does idle mean on Discord? If a user is inactive or away from the keyboard (AFK) for a certain time, then their status is idle. A yellow crescent represents the ‘Idle’ status. Discord automatically sets this status for a user who is logged in to Discord but isn’t active or hasn’t opened the app for some time. A user with idle status means he/she won’t be able to respond immediately as they might be away. This is a very useful feature of Discord. Coming to the other two statuses, Do Not Disturb, as the name suggests, means you are expecting members to not disturb you. Discord Notifications won’t work when Do Not Disturb Status is On. A red circle with a dash in the center represents the Do Not Disturb status. Users who are ‘idle’ will still receive notifications, unlike Do Not Disturb. Invisible is the last Discord Status. If a user is ‘invisible’, they will appear offline to other members. A hollow gray circle represents invisible status. You can manually set your status to ‘Do Not Disturb’ or ‘Invisible’. Discord automatically switches between ‘Idle’ and ‘Active’ statuses depending on the activity of the user. Additionally, you can manually set your status to ‘Idle’. The catch here is, that you have to manually switch the status to ‘Active’ or any other as Discord won’t change it for you. There is also a “Custom Status” option in Discord. We covered this in the Discord Status guide.
